i learned to allow myself to know that i am enough
NFL running back David Montgomery has spoken very openly about his struggles with mental health and the benefits of seeking help.
During his rookie 2019 season, he experienced suicidal thoughts and depression. This dark period was significantly fueled by relentless and harsh criticism he received from fantasy football managers online. David described himself as being in a “very dark place” and “scared to live” due to the overwhelming pressure and feeling of being devalued as a person rather than just a player.
A timely call with his young nephew with leukemia was a turning point that saved his life and gave him a renewed perspective and purpose. Since that experience, he has actively worked with a therapist for five years to regulate his emotions, manage pressure, and affirm his self-worth.
David’s goal is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, emphasizing that professional athletes are human beings who are vulnerable to emotional pain and that seeking help through therapy is a strength, not a weakness.
